Check the links below for more information. bronx | brooklyn | manhattan | queens | staten island Bronx Compost Project home gardening center compost demonstration • Visit The New York Botanical Garden’s Compost Demonstration in the newly opened Home Gardening Center. Learn how to compost in a 3-part compost bin that was constructed by the Bronx Green-Up staff and Master Composters. You will also see examples of other composting bins suitable for backyards, as well as community gardens and school gardens. A Master Composter usually visits weekly and may be available to answer your questions. Please consult www.nybg.org for a schedule of Home Gardening demonstrations. compost bins • The Bronx Compost Project does not stock compost bins for sale. Thursday, January 28, 6 to 9 pm Working with worms in the classroom is a great hands-on way to teach ecology, recycling, and gardening. Learn how to set up a worm bin, feed worms with food scraps, and maintain the system. We will discuss ways to incorporate worm composting into science, math, and language arts for grades K-12. Participants will receive a wormbin discount voucher, which entitles them to purchase one worm bin including 1 lb of worms for only $44. $5 materials fee; registration required. Thursday, February 25, 6 to 8 pm Join the NYC Compost Project in Brooklyn to learn how leaves, kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, and weeds can all become garden gold through composting. Making dark, rich, crumbly compost doesn’t take much time, work, or space. Tuesday, January 26, 3:30 to 4:30 pm Taking waste reduction to the next generation! By using red wiggler worms, you can compost indoors and help nature to recycle its nutrients, while reducing the amount of waste that you produce. Workshop will cover the process of decomposition, as well as how the worms help the process along. Each participant will have the chance to make and bring home their own mini worm-bin. Friday, February 5, 6 to 8 pm Join the NYC Compost Project in Manhattan for this pre-Valentine's Day wormshop to learn how red wiggler worms can turn garbage into a special fertilizer for plants, trees, and roses! Worm bin set-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting will be covered, as well as demonstrations of romantic gifts that can be made from your compost. Sunday, March 28, noon to 2 pm The spring backyard composting workshop will help you put all those dead plant scraps from last year to good use. Workshop will cover the science behind composting and how to set up and maintain a compost bin in your backyard or community garden. Different bin setup options will be illustrated including a two bin system, compost tumbler, and metal can bin. Discounted backyard compost bins will be available for purchase. Registration is required. Workshop fee $5 per person, cash only.
Saturday, April 10, workshop 10 to 11 am & bin build 11 am to 4 pm Does your community garden want to expand its composting program to handle more material? Are you looking to involve more community members in your garden, but not sure how? This workshop will offer practical ideas and tips for setting up community scale composting in your garden. We will also examine the community composting methods used at La Plaza Cultural Community Garden, including their 3-bin system, metal can composters, and 3 compost tumblers. After the 10 am workshop, from 11 am to 4 pm workshop participants are invited to help the garden members construct another 3-bin system to expand the current composting program. Experience with tools is not necessary. Registration is required. Workshop fee $5 per person, cash only.

Saturday February 13, noon to 2 pm All you need is a sunny window and you can grow kitchen and medicinal herbs indoors. This class will focus on the 2010 Herb of the Year, Dill, and its umbelliferous (aromatic) cousins: parsley, anise, caraway, and fennel. Learn helpful tips on the proper soil, sun, and watering conditions, and discover the benefits that finished compost can provide to your herbs. You will have the opportunity to plant Dill seeds in compost to begin your own herb garden at home. Supplemental texts will be provided. Workshop fee $5 per person (cash only).
